Steel supplied by Orrcon Steel – one of Australia’s leading steel manufacturers and distributors - is playing an integral role in the multi-million redevelopment of Melbourne’s M80 Freeway.

Working with long-term customer Coslee Heavy Metal Fabricators, Orrcon Steel supplied the tubular structural steel for a number of projects on the M80, including:

Lane Usage Message Signs (LUMS) and fixed sign gantries for the M80 Ring Road Upgrade Packages 1, 2 & 3;

LUMS and fixed sign gantries between the Western Highway and Furlong Road; and

Truss Gantries and Cantilever signage for the M80 Upgrade Corridor Wide Intelligent Transport System.

A number of challenges were met and resolved in the supply of steel, in particular the delivery times and grade of materials.

“Coslee was concerned that the steel would not be delivered in time to meet the strict requirements of the project,” National Business Development Manager for Orrcon Steel, Mr Michael Iaconis, said today.

“We took it upon ourselves to get the entire project delivered before the required date and we were able to offer storage of the product until needed, which worked perfectly for Coslee.

“We also faced challenges in the supply of different grades of steel on concurrent projects that used the same section sizes.

“Our solution was to provide unique product identifiers to clearly label stock lengths for each project.”

The M80 Freeway upgrade is just one of a number of projects Orrcon Steel has completed in conjunction with Coslee in Victoria. The two companies have worked together on civil construction projects for almost 10 years now, including:

Variable Message Sign (VMS) cantilever structures, LUMS gantries, lighting poles, camera poles and traffic signal poles for the Eastlink Freeway;

Lighting poles for the Peninsular Link on the Mornington Peninsular; and

Lighting poles for Melbourne Olympic Park.

Orrcon Steel has supplied RHS, SHS and CHS structural steel to Coslee Heavy Metal Fabricators since 2004 and the relationship continues to go from strength to strength.

Coslee Heavy Metal Fabricators General Manager, Mr Joe Cosentini, couldn’t agree more.

“The relationship between Coslee and Orrcon is fantastic. I would like to think it is more than just a customer and supplier relationship. The service and quality of the product that is provided by Orrcon can only be described as first-class.”

The successful partnership will continue as Coslee seeks to supply lighting and gantry solutions to a number of upcoming Australian infrastructure projects.
